Bienvenue à Cassis

This small fishing village is tucked between the tall, rocky calanques (“coves”), and hasn’t been tainted by tourists- even though its a popular spot in summertime. Hardly a fishing port these days, Cassis’ narrow streets are full of jovial bistros, bars and beach chic boutiques. It’s an easy side trip from Marseille, it’s 40 minutes by car. And it may be the only city I’ve been to where it’s pleasant to be surrounded by other travelers. It feels comfortable, happy, and WARM.

To Do

While we were there, we took a boat tour around the bay. It was so beautiful I cried, literally. It had been a dream of mine to see the beautiful turquoise water of the Med. There are at least 30 boats that do loops like this, with long bench seats. All the tour guides are laid back and hilarious. We enjoyed our tour however, it was in French. I’m not sure how things would go in English

There are some beautiful beaches here. And yes, even if you like to go for a dip nude!

There are some wonderful hikes up the rocky coves. A notable one being les Calanques de Port Pin. As if the views weren’t enough, there are some interesting rock formations. One is called the “Blowhole,” like a whale. It’s what the name describes, a long hole in the center of the rock where freshwater had leaked and carved its way to the ocean. You can hear the water enter and when everything lines up, it will spray.

To Eat

I love grabbing something to go and eating by the water. We got sandwiches in town and drove to eat them before our hike. If you like tuna, I don’t! I recommend a pan bagnat. It’s a type of sandwich thon crudité that is specific to Provence. It’s a round bun filled with salad, tomato, egg, olive and tuna.

I had a plain old chicken crudité on a baguette.

Cassis

If you gaze towards the eastern horizon, you’ll be met with a stunning rocky outcrop with a 14th-century château placed like a crown jewel.

Driving in will show you the sandy, rocky, hilly terrain. You get the sense that the Mediterranean is not far away. The hills are left wild and untouched, interwoven with the occasional winery that produces Cassis Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée whites and rosés.

We had a quick visit, and maybe you can see from the photos- the weather took a turn. It was a beautiful morning, but it was raining by the late afternoon.

I’ll definitely be back someday, it’s a lovely pearl of a city.

This sounds like the perfect little getaway! I’ve only been to Paris but can’t wait to get back and explore more of France!
